Best film locations in Valencia, Spain

If you are looking for locations for your next production, Valencia is an excellent place to start searching. From ‘El Cid’ (1961) by Anthony Mann to ‘La mala educación’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, many national and international directors have been interested in the Valencian Community as their film set.

Because of the variety of locations it has: from natural and urban landscapes that maintain the spirit the rural past, to its futuristic architecture, as well as its characteristic Mediterranean light, the Valencian Community has been chosen as the setting for numerous films. For example, the Valencian director Luis García Berlanga shot the film ‘Todos a la cárcel’ (1993), winner of 3 Goya awards, in the former model prison of Valencia.

Here are some of our favourite locations:

Albufera Natural Park

This location, 10 km south of Valencia, is one of the most representative coastal wetlands of the Mediterranean basin. Films such as ‘Cañas y Barro’ have been shot in this Natural Park and, currently, Álex Pina and Esther Martínez, creators of ‘La casa de papel’, are shooting ‘El embarcadero’.

El Cabanyal

The Cabanyal district of Valencia is known for its peculiar urban look and its century-old houses that preserve the popular modernism. The origin of this neighborhood can be found in fishing and it has evolved until in a very attractive and trendy part of the city.

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias

The City of Arts and Sciences is an architectural, cultural and entertainment complex in the city of Valencia, designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, together with the engineers Alberto Domingo and Carlos Lázaro, authors of the structural design of the roofs of L’Oceanografic. Its modern architecture has been featured on TV series such as ‘Westworld’ (2016).

Mercado Central

The space currently occupied by the Central Market was, since the first expansion of the city, the usual location for street markets. In 1839, an open-air market was inaugurated in this location, the Mercado Nuevo, the germ of the current Central Market. Towards the end of the 19th century, this market was clearly insufficient for the city of Valencia. For this reason, the Valencia City Council bought a bigger space for the construction of the new market. This building has been preserved until today.

El Saler

The beach of El Saler is possibly the best of all the beaches in the city.

White sand, dunes, clean water, gentle breeze… El Saler beach is top quality and is located at the southern end of the city, 15 minutes by car and only half an hour by bus from the center of Valencia.

The main feature of this beach is its natural environment, its thin sand, and its large area. This beach is located south of the beach of Pinedo, and north of the beach of the Devesa, to the west is bounded by the marsh and the lagoon, as it is within the limits of the Natural Park of the Albufera.
